What Gives You The ICK

The Ick. Whyyyyy? You meet someone, all is going well and then suddenly BANG, out of nowhere, you've got the ick. And it might be the simplest of things that causes it!

The way they make those noises when they eat.

How they smell.

The emojis they use on a text.

Terms of endearment - love you lots like jelly tots just kills my soul.

I went on a date and it was lovely - great guy, good laugh all going in the right direction. Then he started leaving voice notes and to end the message he would pause then say 'bye-di-bye' in this over-the-top singsong voice..... argghhh I tried to fight it, I really did, after all it's just one word, three tiny syllables. But this guy loved his voice notes, and I found myself cringing towards the end as I knew it would be coming....

HIM: 'Ok, i'll speak to you soon'

ME: Please God let him leave it there....

HIM: ...Bye-di-bye

ME: Dead inside.

And that was it. The ick was here to stay. And how do you explain to someone, something as petty as, I don't like how you say goodbye. I mean who do I think I am? But I couldn't help it. Just no.

But, my friends, it can happen to anyone, we shouldn't feel bad, it can strike at any time, creeping up on us unawares and then - repulsion. It can make you irritated, embarrassed or ashamed. Sad times.

However, according to science, the ick is a subconscious thing but it's definitely 'a thing' so you shouldn’t ignore it. You should always trust your gut right? And the ick is a gut reaction. If you simply can't cope with whatever is making you feel turned off by the other person, then you should act on it. Otherwise it isn't fair on anyone. Just pull the plug.

What gives you 'The Ick'?
